Nokia N900 – excellence wears elegance

7 Nov

Nokia N900 is considered to be the geekiest mobile phone ever released. And I, after two weeks of the trial, have to admit this statement is true. But the question is: why is it so great? What’s in it for me? No matter if you are Casual User or Poweruser – this review is for you.

Nokia 6700 slide – an entry level smartphone for a geek girl (review)

17 Oct

Overview

‘An entry level smartphone for a geek girl’ – that sentence summarizes everything. Nokia 6700 slide might not look like a smartphone but it is. You won’t find here Wi-Fi or GPS but it’s equipped with normal 3G/HSDPA connectivity so if you have a data plan lack of Wi-Fi won’t be such a big deal. Some people might think that without these things we can’t name any phone a smartphone but they’re wrong. What makes this little thing (95.2 x 46.1 x 15.9 mm) ‘Smart’ is of course the OS. 6700 slide is based on Symbian S60 3rd edition Feature Pack 2. OK, we know that it’s not top of the line model but why I suggest that it’s aimed to women? The form factor is the key. Sliders are usually addressed to women in my humble opinion. The sales package is quite good. You get additional 2GB microSD card (but you can use even 16GB without problems – I tested it), CA-101D USB cable, fast AC-8 charger and WH-101 stereo headset .

This is why your netbook sucks. Unless it is Nokia Booklet 3G.

11 Oct

This is my take on Nokia Booklet 3G which I recently trialled thanks to wonderful folks at WOMWorld/Nokia. I decided not to put regular review on this one unless it’s not a typical thing that we are covering here. I mean it’s not a mobile… but it’s a mobile thing :) Many of you out there might have or have had in the past netbook. You know, that little brother of notebook. You know that you can’t play newest games on it but you want it to be the best at what it was made for. Being mobile.  Market is flooded with many different models that are basically the same (except few differences) but are those devices doing their job well? I thought that my Samsung N210 is just brilliant unless i got my hands on Nokia Booklet 3G… Here is why. (more…)

Ultimate camera smackdown! Is E5′s EDOF camera that bad?

6 Oct

There was a lot of buzz recently about Nokia’s new strategy on middle-end phone’s cameras. I’m talking about EDoF. Some of you might not be familiar with this abbreviation so I’m here to help. Basically, without going techie on this one, it means that the camera module can’t focus on a one, particular object. The camera is able to focus on all the things that are in the distance from 50cm to infinity. It means that you can say ‘bye bye’ to all those stunning close-ups and macros that you took before with your smartphone.

Unfortunately it looks like whole new Eseries line-up is going to go EDoF and leave the Auto-Focus equipped cameras to multimedia centered Nseries. Today, I’m going to compare Nokia E5′s 5mpix camera with 6700 slide (5mpix Carl Zeiss) and E71 (3,2mpix AF). I tried to took pics in several different light conditions and distances (low light, daylight, close-up’s and normal pics). Just for your information – all the pics above are uncompressed, unedited and even not watermarked. All the phones had the latest firmware available at the moment and the lenses were clean. (more…)

Nokia 5230 – quality at low price

3 Sep

Nokia for years was known for quality and reliability of their phones. They were simple, functional and endure. But it was in the past, when there were no touch screen, high-end mobile devices in the market. How does Nokia cope with the problem of fast developing mobile phones industry competition? Releasing phones with concrete target groups. One of them is Nokia 5230 – theoretically low-end smartphone targeted at more demanding teenagers and mobile navigation fans.

Did it meet its task? Let’s find out.
