This is why your netbook sucks. Unless it is Nokia Booklet 3G.

11 Oct

This is my take on Nokia Booklet 3G which I recently trialled thanks to wonderful folks at WOMWorld/Nokia. I decided not to put regular review on this one unless it’s not a typical thing that we are covering here. I mean it’s not a mobile… but it’s a mobile thing :) Many of you out there might have or have had in the past netbook. You know, that little brother of notebook. You know that you can’t play newest games on it but you want it to be the best at what it was made for. Being mobile.  Market is flooded with many different models that are basically the same (except few differences) but are those devices doing their job well? I thought that my Samsung N210 is just brilliant unless i got my hands on Nokia Booklet 3G… Here is why. (more…)

Wanna test drive Nokia N8 or C7? Here’s your chance!

8 Oct

Are you not convinced by N8 and Symbian^3 yet? You’re wondering how the things works and looks exactly? Maybe you have a one, particular app that you can’t live without and you are worried if it’s working on newer OS? Well, I think I have a solution for you.

Forum Nokia have a special developer tool for testing their apps on real devices, connected to the servers somewhere in Finland. Thankfully you don’t have to be a developer to test out those devices. All you need to have is a Java installed on your computer and a Forum Nokia account. Once you register and login to your account go to Remote Device Access page. There you have a list of devices you can test right now. There are 3 C7s and 7 N8s available at the moment. Not only the newest ones but also older S60v3 and S60v5 devices. There are also some limitations. You have 8 hours per day for reservations and you can reserve each device for max. 3 hours. Don’t worry if all devices are in use at the moment. You can schedule your reservation for sometime in the near future. By the time you’re waiting for your turn you can collect all the software that you want to test on the device etc. You have the option to browse all the disks, install the new software, upload files into the phone’s memory and download files from it. But be nice and don’t mess it up, when you finish testing – remember to uninstall the apps that you installed etc. Just keep it clean. If there’s a time left – and you already finished your testing – cancel the reservation to make it accessible for others. Keep in mind that this a tool for developers. Don’t overuse it just for fun because Nokia can decide to pull it down due to the unwanted traffic.

Ultimate camera smackdown! Is E5′s EDOF camera that bad?

6 Oct

There was a lot of buzz recently about Nokia’s new strategy on middle-end phone’s cameras. I’m talking about EDoF. Some of you might not be familiar with this abbreviation so I’m here to help. Basically, without going techie on this one, it means that the camera module can’t focus on a one, particular object. The camera is able to focus on all the things that are in the distance from 50cm to infinity. It means that you can say ‘bye bye’ to all those stunning close-ups and macros that you took before with your smartphone.

Unfortunately it looks like whole new Eseries line-up is going to go EDoF and leave the Auto-Focus equipped cameras to multimedia centered Nseries. Today, I’m going to compare Nokia E5′s 5mpix camera with 6700 slide (5mpix Carl Zeiss) and E71 (3,2mpix AF). I tried to took pics in several different light conditions and distances (low light, daylight, close-up’s and normal pics). Just for your information – all the pics above are uncompressed, unedited and even not watermarked. All the phones had the latest firmware available at the moment and the lenses were clean. (more…)

Have you heard that Nokia X7 is coming? Well, Ovi Store say so.

30 Sep

I admit, it’s not a hot news. The device was rumored since a while now, but those were only rumors. No release date, no specs and no blurrycam pictures at all. Well, it seems like Nokia is doing well in securing their channels of information but there’s a little something something that can confirm that device is going to be announced in the near future. I’m talking about Ovi Store and it’s device database. When you access it in normal way there’s no sign of the device but when you do a simple trick and just change the device name in the end of url adress… (more…)

Nokia 6700 slide unboxing

27 Sep

…and we’ve got another review unit! It’s pretty late because the device is here since a week, but… I was too lazy to post it. Forgive me :) So, coming down to the topic, I’ve got my hands on that little beast and first thing I did with it was that short unboxing video:

First impressions were pretty damn good. Great build quality and the Carl Zeiss camera… But then I found some disadvantages. I you want to know what I think about the device stay tuned for the review. It’ll be up sometime in the near future.
